Selection of the most appropriate depopulation method for the welfare of poultry

This selection guide has been developed for competent authorities, but it is available to any interested party. It is structured as a hierarchy of decision trees designed to determine whether a given depopulation method can be used while ensuring poultry welfare.

Please be aware that the proposed ranking of the depopulation methods developed here is based exclusively on animal welfare considerations. It does not take into account other factors that are indirectly related to welfare, such as biosecurity or the physical and psychological safety of operators. These aspects must, however, be considered by the competent authorities when making the final decision.

In addition, the ranking is based on currently available scientific knowledge and the equipment commercially available. To remain relevant over time, the guide should be updated to reflect the latest scientific and technological developments.

The current conditions do not allow for the implementation of the different depopulation methods under adequate poultry welfare standards. In cases of preventive depopulation, it is recommended to assess whether more suitable resources could be made available within a reasonable timeframe to meet these standards.

In case depopulation operations are conducted under suboptimal welfare conditions, it is crucial to carefully document and address these shortcomings to ensure improved preparedness and avoid such challenges in the future. The implementation of other depopulation methods (e.g., partial-house gassing) could also be considered, provided the Member State has sufficient experience and expertise to carry out the procedure effectively.
